Tuairisc Féinmheastóireachta na Gaelscoile/Self-Evaluation Report

Achoimre ar Thuairisc Féinmheastóireachta Ghaelscoil de hÍde, Roscomáin

Rinneamar féinmheastóireacht scoile anuraidh ar theagasc agus ar fhoghlaim i nGaelscoil de hÍde le linn an tréimhse Eanair go Aibreán 2013. Le linn na meastóireachta rinneadh meastóireacht ar theagasc agus ar fhoghlaim ins an réimse curaclam Litearthacht (Béarla). Mar chuid den féinmheastóireacht scoile chuireamar suirbhé chuig múinteoirí, páistí agus tuistí agus bhí cruinnithe foirne againn.

Bhí áthas orainn a thabhairt faoi deara go bhfuil go leor láidreachtaí ag an scoil sa litearthacht. Thaispeáin na trialacha chaighdeánaithe sa Bhéarla go bhfuil an chuid is mó de na páistí ag feidhmiú thar léibhéal na noirm náisiúnta. Tá dea-chleachtas sa scoil ó thaobh deacrachtaí a aithint go luath. Úsáideann na múinteoirí idirdhealú go héifeachtúil ina múinteoireacht. Tá réimse oiriúnach de mheastúcháin ar siúl sa scoil don litearthacht. Tá dearcadh dearfach ag na páístí i leith an Bhéarla.

Ceapaimid go gcaithfimid scileanna éisteachta na bpáistí a fhorbairt agus toisc gur Ghaelscoil atá againn caithfimid díriú isteach ar an Béarla ó bhéal. Ba cheart dúinn níos mó airde a thabhairt don scríbhneoireacht freisin. Tá go leor den léitheoireacht déanta mar cheacht ranganna agus ba mhaith linn modheolaíochta difriúla a úsáid.

Tá sé beartaithe againn don bhliain 2013/2014 níos mó béime a chur ar Scríbhneoireacht Béarla tríd na scoile. Beidh gach rang ag díriú isteach ar an genre céanna de scríbhneoireacht ar feadh tréimhsí de 7 seachtaine i rith na bliana. Beidh an modh céanna in úsáid don scríbhneoireacht ar fud na scoile. Beidh saor scríbhneoireachta ar siúl ag na páistí agus beimid ag súil go mbainfidh siad taitneamh as a bheith ag scríobh. Beimid ag cur níos mó béime ar scríbhneoireacht don lucht éisteachta.

Don scoilbhliain 2014/2015 leanaimid ar aghaidh ag cur béime ar an Béarla ó bhéal agus an scríbhneoireacht agus tosnóimid ag díríu isteach ar an léitheoireacht. Beimid ag cur béime ar “station teaching” sa léitheoireacht agus “guided reading”.

In the school term January to April 2013 we undertook a review of teaching and learning in Gaelscoil de hÍde. After we gathered evidence, analysed evidence and drew conclusions we agreed as a staff to focus on literacy (English). A school self-evaluation report was drawn up and an improvement plan was written and the plan continues to be implemented and monitored. As part of our review we surveyed teachers, parents and pupils and we held focus groups to look at certain areas of literacy.

We found that the school had several strengths in the area of literacy including the fact that, almost 90% of the children are achieving at or above the national norm, early intervention strategies are working well for children experiencing difficulties, differentiation strategies used by class teachers are working very well and children are being assessed appropriately. Children have positive attitudes towards literacy.

We felt that the listening skills of the children need to be further developed and that as this is a Gaelscoil we need continued attention on oral language. We also felt that we need to concentrate more on the different genres of writing as the children very often are only writing in the narrative form and there is very little continuity throughout the school. We felt that there is a lot of class teaching of reading and we decided that this is an area we would have to look at.

Based on our findings we have decided to focus on Writing throughout the school for the school year 2013/2014 with a focus on reading for the school year 2014/ 2015. We will continue to implement the action plan on Oral language which we developed in the school year 2012/2013.

For the school year 2013/2014 all classes will focus on the same genre of writing for 7 week periods throughout the year ensuring that all children get an opportunity to write in the various different genres. A similar approach to writing will be used in all classes. Free writing will also be encouraged and all children will get a chance to write freely for a period on Thursdays in the hope that they will learn to enjoy writing. We will also put a greater emphasis on children writing for an audience.

For the school year 2014/2015 we will continue to implement our action plans for Oral Language and Writing and we will concentrate on English reading. We will introduce station teaching in all classes with the help of the learning support and resource teachers. Up to second class station teaching will take place regularly and in the middle and senior classes it will take place in blocks of 7 weeks with the emphasis in the senior classes on Comprehension, Spelling and class novel and the junior classes placing the emphasis on guided reading and dictation.
